Context
Personalised pricing allows a platform to estimate what different users may be willing to pay for the same digital service. The price difference may be invisible because each person sees only the offer made to them.
On a dating platform, age is not merely a billing variable. It is part of the intimate profile and can become a proxy for urgency, income or perceived bargaining power.
Argument
Mozilla and Consumers International found Tinder operating up to thirty-one distinct price points for the same subscription within a single country, a spread of up to five times for identical service: $4.99 to $26.99 in the United States, $4.45 to $25.95 in the Netherlands. Across six countries, users aged thirty to forty-nine paid on average 65.3 percent more than users aged eighteen to twenty-nine. Tinder settled age-pricing claims for $17.3 million, and again for $60.5 million, the latter covering some 260,000 Californian class members under the Unruh Civil Rights Act.
Prices can vary for legitimate reasons such as promotions, taxes or testing. The problem is opacity combined with a consistent demographic effect. When users cannot compare the offer against an accessible public price, they cannot know whether the platform is charging for the product or for what it has inferred about their willingness to pay.

Key finding
Mozilla and Consumers International found Tinder operating up to thirty-one distinct price points for the same subscription within a single country, a spread of up to five times for identical service: $4.99 to $26.99 in the United States, $4.45 to $25.95 in the Netherlands.
