Thesis 03 / 31

The scarcity is manufactured, and the removal of the scarcity is the product.

The platform introduces the restriction. Then it sells its removal.

Context

Digital profiles are not a naturally scarce resource. The platform decides how many can be liked, which incoming likes remain hidden, whether a choice can be undone and how visible a profile will be.

Once those limits exist, removing them becomes a product. The user is not only paying for additional capability; they are paying to escape a constraint designed into the free experience.

Argument

Daily like limits, concealed incoming likes, restricted rewinds, Boosts, Super Likes, Tinder Plus, Gold, Platinum and Select, Hinge Plus and HingeX. Every paid tier retails the suspension of a constraint the platform introduced. Nothing in the underlying technology requires that a user be shown that somebody likes them while being prevented from seeing who. The friction is an engineering decision with a price attached, and it is disclosed to shareholders as à-la-carte revenue.

Scarcity can help manage spam or abusive use, so a limit is not automatically exploitative. The critical distinction is whether the restriction protects the community or primarily creates urgency and a conversion opportunity. When visibility, certainty and reversibility are separately monetised, the architecture of frustration becomes part of the revenue model.

Evidence

Implication

The platform creates friction and sells relief from that friction.
